Join us for this class to learn step-by-step how to turn your portrait photos into black & white work of art using the powerful tools of Luminar NEO. To make it more interesting, we will get inspired by the work of Arnold Newman and focus on more natural environmental portraits. This way, you will be able to apply the editing workflow to more than just studio captures.

Arnold Newman (1918-2006)

Arnold Newman (1918-2006) is widely renowned for pioneering and popularizing the environmental portrait. With his method of portraiture, he placed his sitters in surroundings representative of their professions, aiming to capture the essence of an individual’s life and work. Though this approach is commonplace today, his technique was highly unconventional in the 1930s when he began shooting his subjects as such. He is also known for his carefully composed, abstract still lifes.

His work is collected and exhibited in the major museums around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Chicago Art Institute; The Los Angeles Museum of Art; The Philadelphia Museum; The Tate and the National Portrait Gallery, London; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; and many other prominent museums in Europe, Japan, South America, Australia, etc.

B&W Landscape Editing Class

Inspired by Ansel Adams

Using Black & White for Landscape photography is beautiful. It provides a semi-abstract, expressive and timeless way of capturing the landscape. Additionally, working in black and white can improve your seeing and compositional skills and ultimately make you a better landscape photographer.

In this class, we will get inspired by one of the most recognized photographers in the world and a master of black and white landscape photography - Ansel Adams. We will use his dodge & burn (Zone System) technique to create powerful and dramatic images, and we will learn how to use some other tools in Luminar NEO to bring your black and white landscape photos to another level.

Whether you are a landscape photographer or just someone interested in the dramatic B&W, you will gain plenty of inspiration from this class.

Ansel Adams (1902-1984)

Ansel Adams was an American landscape photographer and environmentalist known for his black-and-white images of the American West. He helped found Group f/64, an association of photographers advocating "pure" photography, which favoured sharp focus and the use of the full tonal range of a photograph. He and Fred Archer developed an exacting system of image-making called the Zone System, a method of achieving a desired final print through a deep technical understanding of how tonal range is recorded and developed during exposure, negative development, and printing. The resulting clarity and depth of such images characterized his photography.

Adams was a key advisor in establishing the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, an important landmark in securing photography's institutional legitimacy. In addition, he helped to stage that department's first photography exhibition, helped found the photography magazine Aperture, and co-founded the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona.

Inspired by Michael Kenna

Long exposure photography is one of the most fascinating genres in photography. Depending on how long your exposure is, you can create an ethereal, abstract, and dreamy atmosphere in your camera. In this class, we will get inspired by the master of super-long exposure - Michael Kenna, and learn how to edit long exposure photos in a monochrome style. We will create dramatic edits full of textures and elements and learn to use simple light and shadow to create minimal yet powerful results.

Whether you have tried long exposure photography before or not, you’ll gain plenty of inspiration from this class.

Michael Kenna (1953)

Michael Kenna is an English photographer best known for his unusual black and white landscapes featuring ethereal light achieved by photographing at dawn or night with exposures of up to 10 hours. His photos concentrate on the interaction between ephemeral atmospheric conditions of the natural landscape, human-made structures and sculptural mass.

His work has been shown in galleries and museum exhibitions in Asia, Australia and Europe. In 2000, the Ministry of Culture in France made Kenna a Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters.

"National Geographic" Portrait Photography Editing Class

Inspired by Steve McCurry

Portrait photography is one of the most popular genres of photography, with good reason. Good portrait photographers can capture the personality and emotions of people around them, earning money via senior portraits, family photography sessions, etc. In this session, we will get inspired by the author of the incredible "Afghan Girl" photo and official National Geographic photographer - Steve McCurry. First, we will review his photos to learn more about the powerful storytelling style and then re-create them using the tools in Luminar NEO.

Steve McCurry (1950)

Steve McCurry is an American photographer, freelancer, and photojournalist. His photo of an "Afghan Girl", a girl with piercing green eyes, has appeared on the cover of National Geographic several times. McCurry has photographed many assignments for National Geographic and has been a member of Magnum Photos since 1986.

McCurry is the recipient of numerous awards, including Magazine Photographer of the Year, awarded by the National Press Photographers Association, the Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal, and two first-place prizes in the World Press Photo contest (1985 and 1992).

Peter Lik (1959)

Peter Lik is an Australian photographer best known for his nature and panoramic landscape images. He stands at the pinnacle of photographing stunning scenes and becoming a world-renowned personality.

Peter Lik won awards for Master Photographer from the Professional Photographers of America and the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. In addition, he has received fellowship awards from The Royal Photographic Society and the British Institute of Professional Photographers.

HDR Photography Editing Class

Inspired by Trey Ratcliff

High Dynamic Range photography is the method of merging images to create a final photo, involving taking many pictures and then stitching them together. This technique is helpful for interior and exterior locations, but it can also add a fantasy element to create photo manipulations. Unfortunately, the problem with HDR photography is that it is often overdone.

In this session, we will get inspired by the "Father of HDR Photography", - Trey Ratcliff. We will look at his HDR camera settings and follow his photo editing workflow to get both very natural and fantasy results on your photos.

Whether you have tried HDR photography before or this is your first time, you'll gain plenty of inspiration from this class.

Trey Ratcliff is an artist on a mission to help spread consciousness and mindfulness to the world through photography and creativity. Running the #1 travel photography blog globally, StuckInCustoms.com has taken him to all seven continents over the past decade, and Google has tracked more than 140 billion views of his photos, all while building a social media presence with over 5 million followers.

Chris Anderson from TED called him a "pioneer" of the genre of High Dynamic Range photography. Ratcliff created the first HDR photograph to hang in the Smithsonian Museum. Sales of his large-format limited edition prints to fine art collectors worldwide have grown into a multimillion-dollar business. Trey has collectors of his fine art from all around the world. These include knights, professional football players, and celebrities like Edward Norton and Leonardo DiCaprio.

In this popular class, we will get inspired by one of the most recognised modern photographers and filmmakers - Peter McKinnon. We will review three of his favourite editing styles and re-create them in Luminar NEO using its powerful tools.

Celebrity Wedding/Event Photography Editing Class

Inspired by Heather Waraksa

Wedding photography is a mixture of many other photographic genres. It incorporates portraiture, family and group photography, documentary, boudoir, event, and close-up images. Recording a couple's happiest day is genuinely motivating and uplifting. As a photographer, you experience a different love story at each wedding and capture the couple's love for one another. At the same time, it is a pretty stressful and demanding job. But the result is worth the effort.

In this class, we will get inspired by one of the American most popular wedding photographers of the decade - Heather Waraksa. We will review her work and learn how to create a timeless and minimal look for wedding/event photos in Luminar NEO.

Inspired by Annie Leibovitz

Our bonus class will be focusing on colour grading in portrait photography. We will get inspired by non-other than Annie Leibovitz and her powerful retouching technique. First, we will learn how to "dodge & burn", followed by using Luminar NEO's tools to re-create the famous colour grading technique of this popular American photographer.

Annie Leibovitz (1949)

Anna Leibovitz is an American portrait photographer best known for her engaging portraits, particularly of celebrities, which often feature subjects in intimate settings and poses. Leibovitz's Polaroid photo of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, taken five hours before Lennon's murder, is considered one of Rolling Stone magazine's most famous cover photographs. The Library of Congress declared her a Living Legend, and she is the first woman to have a feature exhibition at Washington's National Portrait Gallery.

The Conference will begin at 09:00 AM EDT (02:00 PM BST) on 2nd July 2022, with a couple of complimentary pre-conference sessions available from 18th June 2022. All of the exact start times, details, and links will be published prior to the event.

This conference is suitable for all levers of photography. We will provide an introduction course for Luminar NEO prior to the event and we will edit step-by-step in each of the sessions. 

All the sessions will also be available for download or replay in case you miss something during the live editing.
