What is the LUTs Tool

The LUTs (Lookup Tables) tool in Aperty is a powerful feature designed for photographers looking to enhance their images with sophisticated colour grading. This tool provides an efficient way to transform the visual narrative of your portraits by applying professional-grade colour mappings that can dramatically alter mood and aesthetics.

What are LUTs

LUTs, or Lookup Tables, are tools used in photography and video editing to change an image's colours and tones quickly. Think of a LUT as a preset filter that applies specific colour adjustments to your photo. When you use a LUT, it transforms the original colours in your image based on a set of defined rules. This can help you achieve a particular mood or style, like making your photo look warmer, cooler, or more dramatic. LUTs are especially popular because they save time. Instead of manually adjusting colours and contrast for each image, you can apply a LUT with just one click. Many software programs, like Aperty, offer a variety of built-in LUTs, and you can even create or import your own to fit your unique vision.

Introducing LUTs Tool Controllers

Choose LUT

Access a drop-down menu to select from a range of built-in LUTs or your recently used LUTs. You can also load your own custom LUTs in the .cube format for a personalized touch. The LUT library has a quick-preview feature which allows you to hover over the LUTs and preview their effect on the image without the need of clicking on each LUT individually.

📍 Tip: A quick preview for the LUTs will display the effect based on the strength set by the Amount slider. To see a full preview, adjust the strength to a higher amount.

📍 Tip: When using a custom LUT, it will be automatically saved with your Aperty project and embedded into any custom templates you create, ensuring your unique styles are always at your fingertips for future editing.

Amount Slider

Control the intensity of the selected LUT, allowing you to fine-tune its impact on your portrait.

Contrast Slider

Adjust the overall contrast of the image to enhance details and refine the appearance of the LUT, adding depth to your portraits.

Saturation Slider

Modify the overall saturation of the image to increase or decrease colour intensity, helping to refine the LUT’s effect for a balanced look.

Getting Started with the LUTs Tool

  1. Select your project in the Project Manager and double-click to open it in the Editing module.
  2. Choose the image you want to edit from the Film Strip at the bottom of the application.
  3. Navigate to the Main Editing Toolbar and click the icon with three stars to access the Creative section.
  4. Open the LUTs tool by clicking its name or the triangle next to it.
  5. Click on the "Choose LUT" drop-down menu. Browse through the available built-in LUTs. You can also click the option to load your own custom LUTs in .cube format if you have them.

  6. Select the desired LUT from the list. Once you click on it, you'll see the LUT applied to your image immediately.

  7. Use the Amount Slider to control how strong the LUT effect is. Move the slider left to decrease the intensity or right to increase it until you achieve your preferred look.

  8. Use the Contrast Slider to enhance the overall contrast of your image. Adjusting this can make your colours pop or create a softer look, depending on your preference.
  9. Use the Saturation Slider to increase or decrease the colour intensity. This can help maintain natural skin tones while enhancing the overall vibrancy of your image.
  10. At any point, click the Eye icon to compare the before and after results.
