What is Face AI
Using face recognition technology, the Face AI tool selectively targets a subject’s face, eyes, and mouth. It’s even intelligent enough to recognize a side profile portrait.
Introducing Face AI sliders
Adjust the lighting of a face without impacting the rest of the scene. Emulate a flash or reflector aimed at the face.
This is a useful technology to realistically contour and shape a face. Make the face proportionally smaller and naturally slim, achieving more attractive results in your portraits. It’s also useful to correct lens distortion on a face.
This drop-down allows you to change the color or overall look of the iris. You can choose between Blue, Brown, Green, Grey, Hazel, Honey, and Mint as well as exotic looks (Cat and Owl). The Original option leaves the iris color unchanged.
This slider allows you to adjust the intensity of the Iris setting. Increasing its value makes the Iris adjustments more intense while decreasing it allows more of the natural iris color to show through.
This slider adds a flare to the lower portion of the iris. Adding flare can make darker irises brighter and more visible.
This slider makes squinting eyes more pronounced. To enlarge a subject’s eyes, increase the value of this slider.
Use this slider to whiten the pupils to enhance the eyes.
Enhance a person’s eyes to make them sharper and more expressive.
Dark Circle Removal
Easily remove dark circles or shadows below the eye.
Red Eye Removal
Fix red-eye problems caused by flash.
Thicken and darken eyebrows for stronger framing of the eyes.
Enhance the color of the lips.
Increase the redness of the lips.
Lower the luminosity of lips.
Brighten all smiles in a portrait.
Getting started with Face AI
To use the Face AI Tool, simply open a portrait photo in Luminar NEO and adjust it with the 15 sliders available in the Face, Eyes and Mouth sections to create the desired look. The Face adjustments will allow you to add flash and reflector light and adjust the shape of the subject's face. The Eyes section will allow you to easily change the subject's eye color, apply eye whitening, remove red eyes and dark circles. Finally, the Mouth section will help you to adjust saturation, redness and darkening of the lips as well as apply some additional teeth whitening.
TIP 👍: The tool will be applied to all the subjects in the photo (all people). To edit subjects individually, use the Masking tool and a combination of multiple adjustments (more in the video below).
- Open the portrait image in Luminar NEO using the Add Photos button (Cmd/Ctrl + O) in the Catalog module (L).
- Move to the Edit module (E).
- Open the Face AI tool in the Portrait section of the main toolbar.
- Work your way through the tool, starting from the top by adjusting the face.

Luminar Neo is the latest editing software from Skylum. It was announced back in September 2021, and it's been highly anticipated since.
Luminar Neo is an AI-powered photo editing software. Skylum has said that Neo isn’t replacing their previous release—Luminar AI. But Neo sets out to fix some of the issues users faced with Luminar AI.
We were impressed with the AI tools in Luminar AI. But like many others, we encountered performance issues. Luminar Neo uses the same AI tools, but the new high-speed core engine improves speed and performance.
Luminar Neo isn’t just more of the same. We’re happy to see Skylum has taken Neo in a different direction, adding layer and mask AI tools to the program. This broadens Neo’s appeal, taking it in an Adobe Photoshop direction.
